A dog enumeration activity was conducted at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) campus to assess the population dynamics of free-roaming dogs within the campus environment. The objective was to gather detailed data on the number, distribution, and behavior of dogs to better understand their ecological patterns, social structure, and interaction with the campus community. This assessment added essential information on the characteristics, nature and dog behaviour of the dogs present inside the a closed and protected area, which is found to be different from the free-roaming dogs found on unprotected areas like streets, public places like market areas. This activity is essential for planning future interventions related to dog population management, rabies prevention, and promoting harmonious human-animal coexistence.
The enumeration was carried out systematically across different zones of the campus, documenting key information such as the number of dogs, age and sex distribution, territorial behavior, and their movement patterns. Special attention was paid to areas with higher human activity, such as hostels, canteens, academic blocks, and residential zones, where interactions between dogs and people are more frequent. The activity was carried out by the team members of CreIndia committed to One Health principles.
